"But unfortunately I didn't get that, and if I continue to do what I do I will do New Zealand a disservice," he told reporters on Thursday.

Miz Ardern will step down from her post by February 7. If Labor MPs fail to elect a successor by then, party members will vote to elect the next Prime Minister.

When Jacinda Ardern was elected Prime Minister in 2017, she was the world's youngest female head of government. At that time he was only 37 years old.

She gave birth to a child a year after taking office, becoming the second person in the world to become a mother while serving as prime minister. Earlier in 1990, Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto gave birth to a child while serving as Prime Minister.

Jacinda Ardern wore a headscarf to meet the families of the victims after the Christchurch mosque attack.

After being elected as the Prime Minister, he had to face some tough situations.

He has led New Zealand through the hardships of the Covid pandemic and the impending economic recession. It was during this period that the Christchurch mosque was bombed and a volcano erupted on White Island.

More than 50 people were killed in two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, by a white attacker. This attack in a country like New Zealand shocked the whole world.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern wore a headscarf and ran to the families of those killed in the attack. He was admired by all for his sympathetic attitude.

Ms Ardern said the last five-and-a-half years of her life had been "quite satisfying", but leading the country during a "crisis" was very difficult.

“These events were so big and the nature of them, there was a price to pay. But there was never a moment when it felt like we didn't exist,” he said.

Escape before the fall?

While Jacinda Ardern has become a popular political star around the world, opinion polls show she is slowly losing popularity at home.

Capitalizing on his government's handling of the Covid pandemic, the Labor Party led by him won a landslide victory in the 2020 election. And he was elected as the Prime Minister of the country for the second term.

But the latest opinion polls show a decline in his personal popularity. His popularity is now lowest since he was elected as Prime Minister.

At the same time, his party's popularity also declined.

Ms Ardern said in an interview with the BBC in 2022 that her popularity had fallen because of the measures her government had taken to keep people safe during the Covid pandemic.

At the same time, the rising cost of living, crime, and the inability to fulfill election promises due to the pandemic are also the reasons.

His announcement received mixed reactions in New Zealand. "He's running away before they throw him out," one of his own constituencies told the NZ Herald.

He blamed him for rising crime and rising cost of living.

Another said he was "one of the best Prime Ministers in New Zealand's history".

One said their prime minister was a victim of "misogyny".

But Ms Ardern insisted she was not resigning because of her and her party's declining popularity.

“I am not standing back thinking that we cannot win the election. I am stepping down because I believe we can and will win, and we need new leadership to meet this challenge,” he said.

Miz Ardern highlighted her government's achievements on climate change, social housing and reducing child poverty.

Many others, including the leader of New Zealand's opposition National Party, Chris Luxon, thanked him for his "service to New Zealand".

"He gave his utmost in carrying out this difficult duty," the country's opposition leader said on Twitter.Prime Minister Anthony Albanese described Miz Ardern as an intelligent, strong and compassionate leader.

"Jacinda has worked for New Zealand, she is an inspiration to many and a good friend of mine," he wrote.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he has made a difference in this world that is "immeasurable."
