US forces will begin training Ukrainian troops on the Patriot missile defense system later this month at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. A US military official told VOA on Tuesday.

Training about 100 Ukrainian soldiers is enough to create a Patriot team. According to officials, it will take several months to train 100 soldiers. Fort Sill is the headquarters of the United States Army Field Artillery.

Pentagon press secretary Brigadier General Pat Ryder said last week that the Pentagon is considering options for where Patriot training could be conducted "potentially here in the United States, overseas or a combination of both."

NATO and European Union leaders have reaffirmed their commitment to military aid to Ukraine in response to Russia's nearly year-long aggression, including the supply of advanced air defenses and other equipment.

Britain's Ministry of Defense said on Tuesday that Russian forces and Wagner Group mercenaries are "probably now in control" of much of Soledar. Soledar is a small salt mining town in eastern Ukraine. There is a fierce battle going on. The Battle of Soledar was very damaging to both sides.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described the devastation of Soldar in his nightly address on Monday, saying, "There are almost no walls left intact."

A senior US official spoke to reporters on condition of anonymity on Monday, calling Bakhmut's fight "truly barbaric".

The official said vulnerable soldiers were "mainly affected." A better-trained force then "moved forward to overtake them and occupy the ground."
