Dr. Yunus said, Khaleda Zia, wife of martyred President Ziaur Rahman, has come here. She did not get the opportunity to come for 12 years. We are proud to have given her this opportunity. Thank you again for being with everyone on this special day despite her long illness. I wish you a speedy recovery.
Earlier, Khaleda Zia reached Senakunj at the cantonment at 3:50 pm on Thursday (November 21). Begum Khaleda Zia left for Senakunj from her Gulshan residence Firoza at 3:30 pm. Khaleda Zia last participated in the Senakunj program to mark Armed Forces Day in 2012.
Khaleda Zia left the cantonment house on November 13, 2010. BNP had then alleged that Khaleda Zia had been evicted from the cantonment house through force. After leaving the cantonment house, Khaleda Zia tearfully told reporters at her political office in Gulshan that evening, "She has been evicted from the house that is steeped in the memory of President Zia through state terrorism."
Former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia went to prison on February 8, 2018, after being convicted in an ACC case. The BNP said at the time that she had been unjustly convicted in a politically motivated false case. After that, she was granted conditional temporary release by the government's executive order from March 2020 on the request of her family. The period of her temporary release was extended every six months. After her release, Khaleda Zia's Gulshan residence was in Firoza, but she had to undergo treatment at Evercare Hospital in Bashundhara several times due to illness. Later, on August 6, the day after the Awami League government fell in a student uprising, Khaleda Zia was completely released. President Md. Shahabuddin commuted the sentence of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia under the power of Article 49 of the Constitution, the Home Ministry's Security Services Department said in a notification. She is currently staying at her Gulshan residence, Firoza. Khaleda Zia, who is suffering from multiple diseases including liver cirrhosis, may go to the UK early next month for advanced treatment. Preparations are now underway in earnest for this purpose.
