China's proposal to build a dam in Tibet, NOW India is concerned

Indian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that downstream countries also have some rights in the case of shared rivers.

India has expressed concern over the news of Beijing's construction of a dam on the Yarlung Zangbo River (known as the Brahmaputra in India and Bangladesh) in Tibet, China. Indian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that India's views and concerns have been conveyed to China. The downstream countries also have certain rights in the case of a common river.

The Indian Foreign Ministry spokesperson said this in response to a question on Friday regarding China's construction of the dam. Randhir Jaiswal said that that right has been conveyed repeatedly at the political and expert levels. India's observation is ongoing regarding those rights and interests. The government will take necessary steps accordingly.

It is learned that China will cost an estimated $137 billion to build this dam. This proposed dam is bigger than the country's 'Three Gorges' dam. If it is built, it will be the largest dam in the world. The proposed dam will definitely affect the river flow of the two downstream countries, India and Bangladesh. Both countries are concerned about this.

Jaiswal said, "India has never accepted and will not accept China's occupation of that plateau. Their declaration will not have any impact on India's sovereignty. That area was and will remain India's. A protest will be raised against it at the diplomatic level."
