Russia says the Zircon missile can fly at a speed of 11,265 kilometers per hour and evade Western air defenses.
Commissioned by the Navy in 2018 after lengthy trials, the Admiral Gorshkov is the first ship in a new series of frigates designed to replace aging Soviet-built destroyers as a key means of attack for the Russian Navy.
In 2019, it circumnavigated the world's oceans by sailing 35,000 nautical miles.
Putin hailed the Zircon as a powerful weapon capable of penetrating any existing anti-missile defenses by flying at nine times the speed of sound at a range of more than 1,000 kilometers.
Putin emphasized that Zircon gives Russia's military a long-range conventional strike capability, allowing the country to hit enemy targets with precision.
Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu told Putin on Wednesday that Admiral Gorshkov will conduct patrols in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans and the Mediterranean Sea. However, he did not give any details.
A single hypersonic missile-armed warship is no match for the vast navies of the United States and its allies, some military experts say.
But others have pointed out that the potential deployment of frigates near the US coast could be part of Putin's strategy ahead of the conflict in Ukraine.
